Volcano radio reduces eruption warning time

reports about Merapi FM, based near Indonesia’s Mount Merapi volcano, which gives regular updates in volcanic activity.

The station was started after it was revealed that it took an hour to inform local residents about the lava flow from a 1994 eruption.

The paper describes how 66 people died when the mountain exploded.

One local farmer campaigned for a faster alternative and a year later, opened Merapi Inhabitants Communications Forum of Pasag Merapi.

Five years later, with a team of volunteers regularly monitoring the volcano’s activities, he set up Lintas Merapi FM.

The station is located in Deles village, 1,200 meters above sea level and able to cover a very large area in Merapi’s southeastern slope.

The paper reports that when Merapi erupted in 2006 and in 2010, Lintas Merapi FM aired timely information which led to no reported deaths.

The station is funded and run by farmers and volunteers.
