DVB Myanmar stops ethnic radio shows

The Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) will stop producing its ethnic language radio programme at the end of October, reports Burma News International.

The show, which airs on shortwave, is broadcast in Kachin, Karenni, Karen, Chin, Mon, Rakhine, and Shan languages.

The decision to drop the programme, which has been on air for 21 years, was shared in a meeting with members from DVB’s Ethnic Groups’ forum.

DVB is a non-profit media organization based in Chiang Mai, Thailand and run by Myanmar expatriates.

The station’s aim is to provide uncensored news and information about Myanmar, also known as Burma.

The DVB Ethnic Language Program,e was founded by ethnic armed groups in 1993 at the Karen Nation Union’s former Marnepalaw headquarters.

DVB editor U Khin Maung Soe told Burma News International that the audience for shortwave radio has become smaller because of the preference for print media.

In the light of this, DVB donors have suggested the organisation should stop broadcasting radio programmes and produce TV shows instead.
