DRM to hold free webinar for Indian market

The Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Consortium will hold a free webinar next month targeted at the Indian market.

The session “DRM – Extra Features and Benefits – A Better Choice for Listeners” will see experts from India and senior members of the global DRM Consortium answer questions about the technology.

The webinar coincides with a massive investment in new DRM-enabled transmitters by India’s public broadcaster All India Radio (AIR).

AIR says it will rollout its digital plans by 2017 and recently announced a tender for DRM 800 high-end receivers, further confirmation of its commitment to DRM.

Details about the large-scale manufacture of millions of new receivers have yet to be announced.

Ruxandra Obreja, Chair of the DRM Consortium is hopeful that this will happen soon.

“This (the new tender) is an excellent sign indeed for all manufacturers, as chipsets with multistandards including DRM are already available, making the integration of the DRM standard into receivers an easier and more cost-effective process,” said said.

The DRM team say the webinar is also open to other participants in Asia.

Traditional DRM was seen as a digital radio standard to replace analogue Shortwave and AM (Medium/Longwave) services, allowing FM quality transmissions over much longer distances.

But in recent years, the technology has been enhanced and is now seen as an alternative to DAB technology to replace FM broadcasting too.
