Commercial Radio HK founder dies

The Hong Kong media mogul who founded Commercial Radio has died.

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) reports that 95-year old George Ho Ho-chi passed away last Tuesday.

Ho was born in the US in 1918 and studied at King’s College in Hong Kong before returning to the US, to graduate from the University of California, Berkeley.

He founded Commercial Radio in 1959 after inheriting $6450 (HK$50,000) from his father and held the position of honorary chairman at the station until his death.

Commercial Radio’s general manager, Rita Chan Ching-han told the SCMP Ho was a low-profile and kind-hearted person who “really cared” about the radio staff.

Speaking to South China Morning Post, Rita said: “We miss him very much. We will always remember his doctrines and principles – social responsibility, not profit, comes first.”

Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying also expressed sadness at Ho’s death, saying: “Over the years, he dedicated himself to serving the Hong Kong community.”

In 2001, Ho was awarded a Gold Bauhinia Star for his contribution to society.

Ho is survived by his daughter Linda Ho, and George Joseph Ho, his son, who is also the station’s chairman.
