Pressure on HK radio firm to go digital

Commercial Radio Hong Kong (CRHK) is facing pressure to go digital, according to local media reports.

The Sing Tao Daily reports that a source close to high-ranked Hong Kong government officials thinks the company’s next radio 12-year licence should contain a condition that it must go digital.

CRHK is the only broadcaster not to be awarded a licence to transmit on the DAB+ digital radio platform.

The company runs two terrestrial Chinese stations on FM and one mainly English AM channel.

Its current licences will expire in August 2016.

A spokesman for CRHK told The Hong Kong Standard that its licence renewal process had yet to begin and that the company had not received any details about possible new conditions.

Currently, 12 privately run digital radio channels air in Hong Kong, operated by DBC, Phoenix U and Metro Broadcast.

An additional private DAB+ station due to launch by next year.

Public broadcaster RTHK also broadcasts 5 channels on DAB+.
