UK chart to include online streaming listens

Songs streamed over the internet will now be included in the UK’s weekly singles charts of the Official Charts Company’s Top 40 songs, according to local media.

The move comes as streaming services like Spotify, Deezer, Napster and Pandora steadily gain new subscribers, rising from 100 million globally in January 2013 to 260 million currently.

While compiling its numbers, the company will consider 100 online plays to be equal to one record sale, a stream will be considered only if it has been played for at least 30 seconds and only 10 plays will be counted per user, per day.

The first chart with streaming figures will begin on Radio 1 on July 6.

According to the  , the head of the Official Charts Company said: “So far this year, we’ve seen nine tracks which have been streamed more than 1million times in a week. Last year, only two tracks reached that level. We’re seeing a huge growth.”
