BBC Tamil set to be transferred to India

BBC is set to relocate its popular Tamil language service from London to India as a part of its plans to cut costs before 2017, reports Hindustan Times.

Britain’s international broadcaster has already shifted BBC Hindi to Delhi and believes that moving BBC Tamil to India will benefit its growing audience.

Besides focusing on audience in India, the Tamil service will also serve listeners in Sri Lanka.

Tamil is spoken predominantly in southern India and in north east Sri Lanka.

Large Tamil populations also live in South-east Asia and North America.

BBC News currently employs around 8,400 people, including 5,000 journalists, based in London, around the UK and overseas.

Despite the need for savings, the budget for the World Service is proposed to be increased from $418 million (£245 million) this year to $426.4 million (£250 million) in 2015-16.

The broadcaster also plans an investment of $13.65 million (£8 million) investment in original, distinctive journalism.
