Taiwan radio hosts raise a million to feed the hungry

Two Taiwanese radio personalities have raised more than $33,700 (NT$1 million) for local charities through a campaign to help the hungry over the past year.

The Taipei Times reports that Wang Yi-ming and Mei Tzu – hosts of Taiwan Voice Radio’s flagship show – launched a so-called ‘suspended meals’ campaign.

The concept allows a customer pays for a meal or dish, but lets the restaurant give it to a customer in need.

The paper says the pair and their listeners have purchased 21,534 meals at 20 restaurants in Taipei and New Taipei cities since last April.

Wang told Taipei Times that he and his colleague came up with the idea after hearing about the trend of buying suspended coffee in Italy.

“I did not expect to see so many people willing to financially support our scheme,” Wang said.

On the first anniversary of the scheme, Wang and some participants cut a cake donated by one of the restaurants and made a wish hoping to continue the ‘suspended meals’ campaign until it is no longer needed in the territory.
