RTHK’s Person of the Year 2014

Students of the Umbrella Movement were voted the ‘Backchat Person of the Year 2014’ on RTHK’s Radio 3 on Friday.

Backchat, a weekday current affairs programme, announced seven nominees and opened voting for the most outstanding person from the last 12 months on Chritsmas eve.

The nominees included Indonesian domestic worker Erwiana who was abused by her HK employer for six months, Jack Ma – the founder of Alibaba Group, Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, C Y Leung.

A record 1800 votes were received and Chris Patten, the last British Governor of Hong Kong, came third with 0.46 percent votes.

The Hong Kong Police were second with 39 percent votes.

They were beaten comprehensively by the Students of the Umbrella Movement who received 60 percent votes.

The Umbrella Movement is a pro-democracy political movement that was created spontaneously during the Hong Kong protests of September 2014 against the government.
