Radio journalist shot dead in Philippines

 

Mario Contaoi, a radio journalist, died on Saturday after being shot by unidentified gunmen in Ilocos Sur in Philippines on Friday night.

Contaoi, 52, was a radio reporter for Church-owned dzNS radio station in Vigan City.

He was also a professor of the University of Northern Mindanao, where he had taught for more than 25 years.

According to local reports, he sustained six gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital where he died the following morning.

The authorities are investigating the motive for the killing.

He is 96th journalist killed in the country since 1986.

In 2015, the Philippines was behind the Middle East, Iraq and Syria in the list of the most deadly countries for journalists according to Unesco.

The country also witnessed one of the the world’s deadliest attacks against journalists in in 2009, when 32 journalists were among 58 people killed by a warlord clan intent on stopping a rival’s election challenge.

Senator Grace Poe, chair of the Senate Public Information and Mass Media Committee condemned the killing and called for an investigation into the incident.

“We are calling on the Philippine National Police and National Bureau of Investigation to get to the bottom of the killing of Mario Contaoi. Let us give justice to our partners in the media who report the truth,” she said in a statement.
