Radio station burned down in Philippines

A radio station in Mawab, Davao de Or, Philippines, was burned down by two unidentified men last Wednesday, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) reported.

NUJP said the arsonists arrived on a motorcycle at Tagum City-based 99.9 RP-FM’s transmitter site in the evening and set fire to its building.

According to station owner Pat Lucero Pacquiao, the damage is estimated at around PHP700,000.

He also used to host a daily program and was station manager of 99.9 RP-FM.

While Lucero is clueless about the motive of the attackers, he suspects the incident might be connected to his hard-hitting radio commentary and also to an attempt on his life in October when an unidentified man shot and wounded him as he was heading home after his radio morning program.

Authorities are investigating the incident, the NUJP said.

The Philippines is one of the world's most dangerous countries for journalists, according to Human Rights Watch.

For the third year in a row, the Philippines was ranked fifth among the countries with the worst record of prosecuting killers of journalists, according to New York-based watchdog Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
