Radio City RJ Simran heads to jail

Central Jail Tihar, Delhi, the largest jail complex in South Asia housing approximately 12,000 inmates, has just launched its own radio station.

The broadcast staff from TJFM 8.9, have been personally trained by popular Radio City RJ Simran.

The station will broadcast within the compound from a state-of-the-art studio that has been set up by Simran’s new company.

The radio stalwart will also be offering ongoing professional broadcasting training to the prisoners.

Speaking on her association with the station, Simaran said: “After nearly 14 years in radio, I can vouch for the power of the spoken word and I want to impart this power to the inmates as well.”

Last year, she did an audio documentary on the inmates of Tihar and encouraged by the Director General (DG) of the prison Vimla Mehra, she signed up to help launch the station.

The tagline for the station – Khush Raho (Stay Happy) was coined by the DG herself.

The model jail also has the country’s first drug rehabilitiation and Vipassana meditation centres.
