Radio audiences decline in Thailand – newspaper

Radio listening in Thailand has declined an average of 36 percent over the past three years, claims the Bangkok Post.

Quoting figures from official radio industry research provider Nielsen, the paper suggested that listeners aged 15-24 fell by 34 percent, those aged 25-39 dropped 38 percent, while over 40 years olds dropped 37 percent.

It’s unclear whether the report meant the number of listeners or the amount of time they spent listening to radio – or both.

The figures describe an across the board fall in radio listening, which contradicts what’s happening in much of the rest of the world, where radio listening is steady or up slightly despite increased media competition.

Young people are buying fewer radios and spend somewhat less time consuming radio, according to other data across several countries.

The figures were part of an article describing how online radio listening is rising in Thailand and described how indie station Fat 98 switched off its FM transmitter last month due to high licensing costs and is now operating exclusively online.

It is the second FM station to close in Thailand this year, says the paper.
