New NHK boss in ‘power grab’

Japanese broadcaster NHK’s new boss is attempting a power grab, according to local media.

Several top executives say they were told by controversial new chairman Katusto Momii to write undated letters of resignation.

This would allow him to fire them whenever he wants.

“You were chosen by the former chairman. I will decide my own path,” he told the directors, according to the Tokyo Shimbun.

Local media reports that the order was given at an extraordinary board meeting on January 25.

Momii has already got into hot water after he defended Japan’s use of sex slaves during World War II.

His comments, at a press conference on the day he took office, have been criticised internationally and at home.
