Malaysia: BFM migration show creates a stir

A show on Malaysia’s Business Radio Station BFM has created a stir by discussing the huge migration industry that has flourished as Malaysian’s reportedly continue to leave the country in large numbers.

One of the station’s shows recently featured the director of a migration service confidently predicting that his business will grow over the coming years as more Malaysians look for a brighter future elsewhere.

That’s led to some criticism that local media shouldn’t be helping Malaysians to leave the country.

But the interview won the support of Malaysia Chronicle columnist Koon Yew Yin.

Koon wrote that is is clear people are leaving not simply in search of a “better lifestyle” and “work opportunities” but also in response to the low standard of our politics and politicians, and the misgovernance in the country.

Malaysia main political party, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) has held power in coalition since the country’s independence in 1957.

Critics say the ruling party, the government and the country’s main administration are “intertwined”.

Malaysia has been steadily facing a ‘brain drain’ to countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States.

Around 300,000 Malaysians – mostly degree educated – have left over the past 10 years, according to Talentcorp, a government agency tasked with winning them back.
