Interview: RJ Gaurav, retro show host, Radio City

‘Kal Bhi Aaj Bhi’ is a retro bollywood music show on India’s 20-station network, Radio City 91.1 FM.

The show air weeknights from 9 pm to 11 pm and recently celebrated its fifth anniversary.

We speak to the host, RJ Gaurav, and get to know more about show.

1. Which markets does Kal Bhi Aaj Bhi play in and what’s the format for the show?

Kal Bhi Aaj Bhi plays in all the Hindi speaking markets where Radio City is present; Mumbai, Delhi, Lucknow, Jaipur, Pune, Ahmednagar, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Baroda, Surat. The show plays music from yesteryears and interviews of legends, sharing untold tales of ‘Golden Era’ of the Hindi film industry.

2. What do you think is the secret of its success?

It has been five years since I first started this show and I guess the USP of my show lies in its simplicity combined with great music. Kal Bhi Aaj Bhi showcases the golden moments of memorable stars. It has many inside stories and never heard before trivia related to the evergreen stars and their movies. It gives me the chance to relate with the stars and share their memorable moments with our listeners.

3. How did you mark the show’s 5th anniversary?

It’s been a tradition to celebrate the anniversary with my listeners. This year too, a few fans were invited in the Radio City studios to join the celebrations. Many of them recited special instances & anecdotes since the inception of the show. I was touched when one of my fans presented a beautiful self-written poem.

4. Any particular moment from the show you are most proud of?

It’s difficult to point one episode. Every interaction with the legends is amazing. Their stories, their songs, it’s all very overwhelming. Interviewing evergreen stars like Kalyanji-Anandji, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Rishi Kapoor and many more such legends has been an incredible experience. ‘Evergreen Star Mulakat’ has been one of the best memories of my career. It was just amazing to hear all about their life experiences from the legends themselves.

5. How do you see the Kal Bhi Aaj Bhi theme developing?

Retro as a genre is enjoyed by a lot of listeners. A couple of years back we launched a ‘Kal Bhi Aaj Bhi’ CD in association with SareGama. We get a lot of requests to start the show on our digital platform too. Hopefully, we could see that materialise in the future.
