Hokkien made easy on 988 Malaysia

‘Hok Ki Love Dictionary’ is a brand new segment on Malaysia’s 988 FM’s aimed a promoting Hokkien.

The Stand By You show, which aims to make the Chinese dialect easy to learn, airs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to 12 pm with hosts Cheryl Lee and Yin Yin.

Yin Yin, who speaks fluent Hokkien, was thrilled when the segment was first proposed to her and Cheryl.

“This is a great opportunity for me to brush up my Hokkien while learning from Yin Yin, who will be my private tutor in the studio,” said Cheryl.

With many young ethnic Chinese facing pressure to speak Mandarin,  the use of Hokkien in Southeast Asia is increasingly under threat.

Lim Tock Peng, 988’s Senior Programme Director said: “Hok Ki Love Dictionary promotes the proper use of this widely used dialect while showcasing its uniqueness. Each topic would enable listeners to pick up the correct pronunciation and vocabulary.”
