HD Radio in the spotlight at IRF

Digital radio, streaming music platforms and social media dominated day two of the International Radio Festival in Zurich on Thursday.

The conference, which is now in its fourth year, promises several days of knowledge sharing from pioneers in music radio and technology.

The audience enjoyed presentations from the likes of streaming music platforms Mixcloud and MPme.

HD Radio, the US and Mexico’s chosen digital radio platform, was also highlighted.

Jo D’Angelo from HD Radio’s parent company iBiquity Digital told Asia Radio Today that his session focused on how HD radio could be a digital alternative elsewhere in the world.

“HD Radio technology enables a single FM radio station to offer up to four digital audio programs. For example 99.5 HD1 is a simulcast of the FM analog program on 99.5, but with digital 99.5 can now add an HD2, HD3 and HD4 all with great digital quality.

We now have over 2,200 stations broadcasting with HD Radio technology in the USA and they have created over 1,400 new digital only channels. We have sold 14 million radios and our technology will be equipped in over 30 percent of all new cars sold in 2013.”

Other speakers on Thursday included British radio futurologist James Cridland and Conor Lennon, Director, Off-Piste Radio Network.

The first day of IRF was called Swiss Day and highlighted the local radio scene.
