Chinese radio stations embraced new platforms in 2015: Report

Over the past few years, profound changes have also taken place in the structure of the Chinese media sector and significant progress has been witnessed in the integrated development of traditional and new media.

The All-China Journalists Association (ACJA), has compiled a report on the ‘Development of China’s News Media (2015)’ to present an overall picture of the country’s media industry.

Last year, proactive efforts were made to explore integrated development of traditional and new media in terms of content, channel, platform, operation and management.

According to the report, radio and television program integration has become a common practice, increasing their influence and feeding content to new media.

Radio and television programs are broadcast on their own websites. There are 29 online broadcasting stations, creating a massive network platform.

China National Radio (CNR), CCTV, China Radio International (CRI) and many provincial radio and television stations have embraced the practice of releasing news on various platforms by updating reports on Weibo, posting in-depth analysis on WeChat and providing a multitude of information and video clips on apps.

Radio station programs above prefecture/city level throughout the country are now broadcast live or on demand on apps such as Radio.cn and ajmide FM.

By June 2015, CNR had over 13 million followers on Weibo and over 480,000 on WeChat, and CRI News Radio accounts on Tencent and Weibo had attracted more than 33 million followers.
