BIG goes green for key India festival

One of India’s largest radio networks, 92.7 BIG FM is hoping its listeners’ green credentials will help the station get into the record books.

The station will attempt to collect the largest number of old newspapers at a single location to win a place in the Limca Book of Records.

The activity is part of its annual Green Ganesha campaign, which is now in its sixth year

Ganehsa Chaturthi is one of India’s most widely followed festivals.

The 10 day commemoration sees millions of plaster-of-Paris models of Lord Ganesha, the Hindu God, go on sale around the country.

But the environmental impact of destroying so many models after the festival is huge.

Instead, a growing trend is to use papier-mache models of Lord Ganesha out of old newspapers.

BIG’s campaign will see the eco-friendly Ganesha idols installed in eight cities – Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mysore, Tirupati, Sholapur, Vizag and Mangalore.

The record attempt will see a massive on ground newspaper collection drive in several cities.

The papers will then be supplied to local sculptors to create “green” Ganesha idols.

Ashwin Padmanabhan, Business head of 92.7 BIG FM said: “Whilst we spend time in prayer and celebration (during the festival), we will also do our bit towards creating a greener tomorrow by installing biodegradable and eco-friendly idols.”

Over the past six years, BIG says it has inspired more than a million people to mark a more environmentally friendly Ganesha Chaturthi

festival.
