Singapore’s YES 93.3 in new talent hunt

Eight finalists took to the stage at a Singapore shopping mall on Sunday for the chance to be the Voice of YES 93.3FM.

The city state’s number one radio station – which broadcasts in Mandarin – received 400 entries from listeners vying to win a DJ contract and S$3,000 in cash.

Several contestants were picked to take part in challenges on the night-time show over several weeks in front of a panel of judges.

They were also mentored by YES 93.3FM resident DJs Lim Peifen, Xie Jiafa, Siau Jiahui, and Kenneth Zhong Kun Hua.

The contest has been run several times before and at least four DJs have gone on to permanent jobs with the station including Ivy Tan, Kenneth Chung and Chan Ning.

The winner was 23-year-old conference producer Ong Wei Ling, after beating off her rivals during Sunday’s finals at Square 2 mall, Novena.

Cruz Teng, Assistant Programme Director of YES 93.3FM explained what the contestants had to do to be in with a chance of winning.

“On air qualifiers were held over four weeks for the judges to listen to contestants’ sound quality and appeal over the airwaves. The onsite element was added for the contestants to demonstrate their live hosting skills – which is vividly different from on air hosting,” he said.

YES 93.3FM is consistently rated number one in bi-annual audience research by Nielsen.

It is one of 13 stations owned by Mediacorp, Singapore’s largest broadcaster.
