Asia tributes to US radio icon Casey Kasem

Asian radio executives have paid tribute to US radio icon Casey Kasem, who died at the weekend.

The star of the syndication radio show American Top 40 passed away from complications related to dementia.

Kasem, 82 was also the voice of Shaggy in Scooby Doo.

During his last few months alive, he was the subject of an ugly family feud over his palliative care.

Among those paying their respects to Kasem was Vineet Singh Hukmani, CEO of Radio One India.

“Respect from everyone in the Radio industry in India,” he told his Social Media followers.  “We thank you for your endearing voice and spirit that founded the greatest radio countdown show ‘American top 40’ and for making us laugh as the voice of ‘Shaggy in Scooby Doo’. Your voice lives on, on the airwaves.”

Indian radio consultant and former National PD of Red FM Verhnon Ibrahim tweeted: “We have all, everyone one of us in the radio business, been influenced by the genius that was Casey Kasem.”

Inducted into the rock ‘n’roll hall of Fame in 2003, Kasem was the host of ‘American Top 40′ from 1970 – 1988 and again from 1998 – 2003.  The show aired on more than 1,000 US stations and in around 50 countries.

Another tribute came from EON Music, the producers of this region’s first syndicated radio chart.

“Very sad to hear about passing of #CaseyKasem. The inspiration for every radio chart show ever, including our @AsiaPop40. RIP Casey,” said a company tweet.

Meanwhile, Kudisa Kahar, COO of Malaysia’s Star Radio Group also took to Social Media when she heard the news.

“R.I.P. Mr. Radio – we’ll keep our feet on the ground while we reach for the skies,” she said.

On Monday, Casem’s son Mike – a jock on Singapore’s Class 95FM – also tweeted his thanks to fans of his late father for their tributes.

“I feel so much love from everyone. Thank you so much for caring. May dad rest in peace 1932 – 2014. A great life. #CaseyKasem
