71-year old radio announcer Maurito Lim was shot dead in Tagbilaran in Philippines on Saturday, according to Manila Standard Today.

Lim, popularly known as ‘Chairman Mau’ by listeners of his weekly noontime show on dyRD radio, was shot by a gunman in front of the station’s office, according to the police.

An engineer who had previously worked with the National Power Corp., Lim was said to be critical of local officials linked to narcotics.

Lim was the second journalist to be killed after Nerlita Ledesma, a reporter of tabloids Abante and Abante Tonite, was shot dead in Bataan last month.

According to the local chapter of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, he was the 34th to be slain during the current president Aquino’s administration.

While the President said in October last year that his administration will continue to work to stop attacks on members of the press “until this number reaches zero”, 173 journalists have been slain in the country since 1986.

The Philippines was recently ranked 141st among 180 countries indexed by the Paris-based press freedom watchdog Reporters Sans Frontieres (Reporters Without Borders) for this year, reports PhilStar.
