All India Radio set for makeover – minister

India’s state-owned public radio broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) could soon see a revamp, reports the daily The Hindu.

New Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar made the comments at GoaFest 2014.

He said the new government would “re-energise” and “put air” into the channel and bring back its lost glory.

Although hugely popular in many parts of the country, commentators says AIR has failed to keep up with India’s dynamic private FM industry.

The public broadcaster was recently was bailed out by the government after failing to keep a check on its budget.

When questioned about the allowing news broadcast on private FM channels, the Minister told the publication: “My heart is for news.”

On industrialists being allowed to own media companies, he said that cross- ownership of media was being actively debated.
