Make Indian public broadcaster accountable – committee

There is a strong case for the Indian government to supervise the functioning of Prasar Bharati, the public broadcaster that runs All India Radio, according to an editorial in The Economic Times.

The paper says proposals which have been recommended by an expert committee will reflect the spirit and values of the constitution while shunning sensationalism.

The committee has recommended appointing a professional board to supervise Prasar Bharati’s functioning, which also includes Dordarshan TV.

Officials think the board should be accountable to Parliament via a standing committee that has ruling and opposition members on it.

The organisation should be funded properly, hire bright talent and pursue quality programming, added the committee.
