All India Radio to fight cross-border propaganda

The Indian government has decided to ramp up national broadcasters All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan television in border areas to counter propaganda from neighbouring countries, reports The Asian Age.

The areas chosen for strengthening of coverage include those along the country’s border with Pakistan, China, Nepal and Bangladesh.

The government has proposed to spend $155.64 million (Rs 9.86 billion) – the highest ever amount in the last few decades to improve its broadcasting mechanism in the bordering areas.

Out of the total amount `$63.4 million (Rs4 billion) has been earmarked for the expansion of AIR.

AIR is expected to set up 72 FM transmitters and upgrade existing facilities on an urgent basis along the country’s border.
