AFTRS announces short courses for the radio industry

Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) Open has launched introductory and advanced workshops for the radio industry for international students.

Its new schedule 2016 for radio offers courses from January 2016 to April 2016 at some of the best radio studios in the world.

According to AFTRS, radio has always occupied a unique place in the media landscape because of its intimacy, immediacy and availability. It continues to be an exciting and dynamic industry for broadcasters across community, public and commercial stations.

New developments in technology have presented great opportunities as well as challenges for radio content makers making it the perfect time to develop new skills.

AFTRS Open has a course for those interested in learning basic broadcast techniques, improving podcasts or developing a specialist craft and their tutors all industry experts. 

The five-day Radio Intensive course starting January 11, 2016, will teach essential radio skills from experienced radio industry professionals Rachel Corbett (Triple M, NOVA, Sea FM, The Roast) and Jess Campanaro (2GB) and help students gain the confidence to begin their career in radio. It covers everything from roles and responsibilities and announcing and presentation, to editing and studio skills.

The Three-Week Radio School starting February 1, 2016, is designed to provide students with an experience working collaboratively in radio to prepare, produce and deliver content for on-air and online.

The Announcing and Presentation course starting February 27, 2016, will use AFTRS’ state-of-the-art radio facilities and through a series of lectures and practical exercises participants will have the opportunity to select and develop content to create a radio program, go live to air, and they will be provided with individual expert feedback from Rachel.

Radio Content and program Directors Course: Online is a 32 week, online course designed for experienced radio staff working in the commercial and community broadcasting sectors who want to step up to management, content and programming roles. The course is designed to develop students’ programming, management and leadership skills to a professional standard.

It provides a thorough understanding of the role of the Program and Content Director and the elements involved in commercial radio programming. The course helps students to identify and apply skills and knowledge within a workplace context. Students will explore the framework of managing programming campaigns and strategies from inception to completion and cover techniques for idea generation and implementation.

Podcasting 101: Online is a six-week online course that will start on March 31, 2016.

During the course, Rachel will be taking students through a series of online lectures and practical exercises that focus on planning and presenting a podcast series as well as the skills and knowledge necessary to record, edit and upload their own podcast.

Radio Studio Basics is a two-session course on April 16 and 17, 2016. It will teach students how to use a digital radio panel, studio playout and automation systems. Other relevant studio equipment will also be explored.
