Visually impaired Indian student turns RJ

A History graduate from Delhi University’s St Stephen’s college, Kamal Kumar Prajapati is now a freelancer radio presenter at Apna Radio – a community radio station.

In his early 20s, Prajapati also writes radio ads, composes music and anchors stage and television shows.

While doing his schooling from the National Institute for Visually Handicapped in Dehradun, he fell in love with radio as a regular participant at the All India Radio (AIR) programmes at the regional centre of Nazibabad.

After completing his graduation he enrolled in a Radio and Television Journalism course at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication – which runs Apna Radio.

Earlier, he also started a band called ‘Aavartan’ which featured normal as well as physically-challenged students and played at various colleges in Delhi University.

According to Prajapati, he did not try for private radio channels because he wanted to express himself thorough journalism and social causes.

Explaining his choice of the medium, Prajapati told ABP Live: “I thought that people indulge so much in the audio-visual medium that reaching them through writing would be difficult. I wanted my voice to reach the masses.”
