Thai regulator cracks down on illegal ads

Thailand’s media regulator has created a team to crack down on illegal radio and television commercials, reports the Bangkok Post.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) plans to monitor 80 broadcasters constantly, half of them radio stations in Bangkok and neighbouring provinces.

Officials are worried by the rise in advertisements making exaggerated claims, including those for so-called “super drugs” promising eternal youth, fitness and virility.

Last year, at least one radio station was closed down because of illegal advertising. But officials complain about the lack of evidence to prosecute station owners.

Using a technology called audio finger printing, it’s hoped the new monitoring centre will be able provide more accurate details about incidences of illegal advertising.
