Sydney radio war heats up as Kyle & Jackie O return

The much-awaited return of Kyle & Jackie O to Sydney’s airwaves takes place on Monday as part of the launch of KIIS 1065, formerly Mix 106.5.

The pair have moved over in a reported million dollar deal from the top-rated 2DAY FM after 13 years.

Their morning show consistently rated number one for four years and their new bosses at Australian Radio Network (ARN) hope their fans will follow them across.

Their return sees the morning radio show wars move into full battle mode following the launch of 2DAY FM’s new 4-person breakfast show last Monday.

The one-week headstart has given Merrick Watts, Sophie Monk, Jules Lund and Spice Girl Mel B a chance to work on their on air chemistry, which was heavily criticised by listeners on social media.

Several other top Sydney radio personalities returned to air last week following the holiday break to take advantage of Kyle & Jackie O’s late arrival.

There’s even been a scramble – between their former employers Southern Cross Austereo and the DJs’ management – for ownership rights to the Kyle & Jackie O Facebook page, which has more than 28,500 fans.

As well bringing their daily show to KIIS, a nightly ‘best bits’ show will also air nationwide on The Australian Radio Network.

On Sunday, the only clue to their arrival was a holding page on the website of Kiis106.5.

But a TV commercial teasing the new show did begin airing this week.
