Star Publications Malaysia Q2 radio revenues down

In Malaysia, revenues at Star Publication’s radio stations fell nine percent in the second quarter, according to company figures.

Overall Star posted an overall net profit of US$8.7 million (RM28.5 million) for the quarter ended June 30 and declared a first interim dividend of six sen per share.

But radio revenues came in at US$3.9 million (RM12.86 million).

Six monthly revenues for radio were US$8 million (RM26,11 million), down 5.4 percent over the same period last year.

The company said radio recorded a loss before tax of US$686,000 (RM2.25 million) due to higher advertising and promotion expenses for the branding of its RedFM and 988FM radio stations.

In the same quarter of 2012, radio made a small profit of US$98,000 (RM0.32 million).

Revenues were also down at its newspaper and new media businesses but the company expects a pick up in advertising spend in the second half.

Star Publications owns four stations, the English language Red FM, Suria FM in Malay, 988FM in Mandarin and the female targeted Capital FM.
