Singapore radio DJ’s join online ‘pride’ spat

YouTube personality Stephanie Koh posted a video expressing why she is not proud of being a Singaporean, which sparked a debate among netizens, including 987FM radio deejays Dee Kosh and Divian Nair.

In an interview with Razor TV, Koh, a finalist on reality TV show K-Pop Star Hunt, said: “I wouldn’t actually bother about representing this country because to be honest I don’t really feel proud to be Singaporean. Everyone here just thinks the same way, follows the same rules and it’s too rigid for my taste.”

Facing criticism for her remarks, she then posted an online video apologizing for using the word “everyone” and said she meant to describe “majority” of Singaporeans.

As the video quickly became popular with 200,000 views and 6000 likes, two of Singapore’s popular radio deejays, Dee Kosh and Divian Nair, expressed concern about her views.

Kosh and Nair posted their reaction in their own video, worried that Koh’s remarks would “warrant a reason” for her supporters to leave Singapore.

“We were kind of shocked and surprised at how many people had liked the video, shared the video…and concerned at the same time,” said Dee Kosh, 25.

Divian, 26, highlighted that Koh only spoke about things that directly concerned her, saying:

“You’re in a place where you don’t have to think about basic necessities like food, shelter, safety… so what are you complaining about?”

While it got many supportive comments, in stark contrast to Koh’s video, Kosh and Nair’s video only received over 6,000 views.

This sparked a further Twitter spat when Koh took a dig at Kosh for getting so little recognition for their video, who asked Koh to stop complaining about Singapore.
