RTHK new studio plans rejected

Hong Kong legislators have rejected proposals to build new headquarters for public broadcaster Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK).

The Legislative Council’s Public Works Subcommittee voted against the US$787 million (HK$6.1 billion) plans, saying they were too expensive.

Fifteen legislators voted against the request, while 10 supported it.

Lawmakers called for the move to a brand new 10 storey broadcasting centre in the New Territories to be scaled down.

RTHK has been strongly criticised after the costs to relocated from its current location at Broadcasting Drive in Kowloon Tong spiralled from HK$1.6 billion four years ago.

But according to local media, the proposals still could get the go-ahead, when the council’s Finance Committee meet later this month.
