RTHK criticised over attitude towards competitors

The founder of a Hong Kong online radio station has taken a swipe at public broadcaster RTHK over rebroadcast rights.

Albert Cheng, a prominent political commentator in the Chinese territory, runs the station D100.

Recently RTHK filed an injunction against his station, preventing it from transmitting Hong Kong Today, a daily news magazine programme.

In an article published in the South China Morning Post, Cheng says he was puzzled by the broadcaster’s decision not to allow D100 to rebroadcast the show.

He told the paper that D100 already pays to rebroadcast RTHK’s news bulletins and was in talks to pay to air Hong Kong Today.

Cheng said RTHK should allow the widest possible audience enjoy its output and not see D100 as purely a competitor.

He called on the broadcaster to put Hong Kong’s interests before any profit motive.

In a statement, RTHK told Asia Radio Today that the “Department of Justice has sent a letter to D100 web radio due to unauthorized retransmission of RTHK news programme “Hong Kong Today” on its platform”.

It gave no further comment.
