Royal prank DJ sues employer

One of two Australian radio DJs behind the royal wind-up call on Britain’s Duchess of Cambridge is suing her employer for “failing to provide a safe workplace”.

Mel Greig, together with colleague Michael Christian, made the infamous prank call to a London hospital last December where Kate Middleton was being treated for severe morning sickness.

The nurse who answered the phone call, Jacintha Saldanha, committed suicide three days later, after the prank went viral.  An inquest into her death has yet to be held.

Greig and Christian were DJs on Sydney’s 2DAY FM which is owned by Southern Cross Austereo.

Greig’s lawyers said an application has been made with the national workplace tribunal, Fair Work Australia.  The organisation will attempt a conciliation meeting for both parties.

Greig has not returned to work following the incident but Christian went on air again two months after the incident.

Meanwhile Australian police have launched a investigation into whether 2DAY FM broke the law by recording and broadcasting the ‘hoax’ call without permission.
