Radio City’s Diwali initiative to light up underprivileged kids’ lives

India’s Radio City 91.1 FM plans to do something special for underprivileged kids during the upcoming Diwali festival in Mumbai.

The activity, ‘Abki Baar Dedo Akhbaar’, urges all the listeners to donate the old newspapers this festive season.

The money collected from the sale of these newspapers would be utilised to buy new clothes, crackers and sweets for the underprivileged kids.

It is a ritual among many households to go through a cleaning in order to welcome Lakshmi – the goddess of wealth, resulting in lots of old newspapers being sold in scrap.

As the station prompts listeners to step forth to make a difference, several celebrities have come forward to pledge their solidarity towards the cause.

It has already managed to collect more than 4500kgs of old newspapers in 5 days and plans to collect more than 10000kgs to raise around Rs 1,00,000 for underprivileged kids.

Talking about the initiative, Kartik Kalla, National Programming Head, Radio City 91.1 FM says: “Diwali is that time of the year when everyone is shopping, gifting and in a mood for celebrations. Each year, Radio City aims to make this festival special for the listeners. This year we intended to do something different. With ‘Abki Baar Dedo Akhbaar’ we give a chance to the listeners to spread happiness by lighting up this Diwali for the underprivileged in the city. No bigger joy than watching those eyes sparkle & the smiles spread.”
