No FM radio for Apple CarPlay

From Radio Today UK

Apple’s in car device “CarPlay” has been revealed… without an active AM/FM or even DAB radio receiver mentioned.

Instead the service mirrors an iphone, offering apps such as maps, music, messages and SIRI. Radio stations are available via iTunes Radio and a number of third-party apps including iHeartRadio in the US and Australia. It’s expected other apps such as Tune In and Radioplayer will also join in.

CarPlay will be used in addition to a car’s normal functions such as heating control, suggesting car manufacturers can still include traditional radio inside the new Apple-style display.

Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo will showcase vehicles installed with CarPlay this week at an auto show in Geneva, while deals have also been done with BMW, Ford, GM, Jaguar Land Rover, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota. The app will be compatible with iPhone 5, 5S and 5C.
