Massive storm takes Delhi FM stations off air

Five FM stations that broadcast across the Indian capital New Delhi were silenced after a massive storm uprooted one of the city’s main transmitting towers.

Radio One 94.3FM, Big 92,7FM, Fever 104FM, Oye 104.8FM and Hit 95FM fell silent after their transmitters were toppled on Friday.

The site, part of the ‘Common Transmission Infrastucture’, is rented by several private FM players and is located at Kingsway Camp in north Delhi.

The giant thunderstorm was accompanied by wind speeds above 100 kmph.

According to our correspondent in Delhi, Fever 104 FM, which has an antenna on top of a high rise building where its studios are also located, was the first to get back on air, switching over its transmission the next day.

Oye 104.8FM returned to air on Sunday, according to a company spokesperson, followed by BIG FM.

A a technical spokesman from BIG FM Delhi told Asia Radio Today: “We had to work non-stop for 36 hours to restore broadcast. We switched over to a backup transmitter which was installed earlier when, in another incident, the CTI had caught fire.”

Radio One came back on air on Monday evening.  The station earlier issued a statement saying they were in the process of installing a limited range small tower and antenna on top of their office building to restore broadcast,

Government officials say they are working to get stronger signals up within a week using another setup.

The new Minister of Broadcasting, Prakash Javdekar has also offered his full cooperation.

Interestingly, the storm which took down the tower struck just as India Radio Forum was winding up last weekend in Delhi.
