Malaysian radio host apologises for controversial online video

The presenter of Malaysia’s business radio station BFM 89.9, Aisyah Tajuddin, has apologised for her tone and demeanour in a recent online video questioning the enforcement of Islamic hudud law in Kelantan province.

The video titled ‘Hudud Isi Periuk Nasi? (Kupas)’ (Does hudud fill our rice bowls?) was posted on BFM’s website and YouTube channel last Thursday.

It was removed by the station after it caused a public outrage and Tajuddin received many negative comments and death threats on various online platforms.

She and three BFM employees are now being investigated by the police as well as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

In a statement, the BFM management has promised to co-operate with the authorities and declared it support for its employees.

It has also said that it will be filing a police report against those who have threatened the station and the staff.

Reacting to the controversy, Tajuddin said: The objective of the video was to question the priorities of the PAS led Kelantan state government and not in any way insult Islam. The video was about politics, the words and actions of politicians; it was certainly not about the religion.”

She added: “I wish to take this opportunity to apologise for both my tone and demeanor in the video. It was never my intention to mock. It was never my intention to insult. I realize that many took offence. For that, I am truly sorry. I would never, under any circumstance, insult or condemn any religion, let alone my own.”

She also clarified that the true intention of the video was to spur the discourse surrounding the socio-economic conditions of the people in Kelantan.
