Kyle & Jackie O fans follow them to KIIS

Arguably Australia’s most recognised radio personalities Kyle and Jackie O have had a strong start on new Sydney station KIIS1065, according to ratings released on Tuesday.

The duo’s new morning show achieved a 9.3 percent share of listening in the first research period of 2014.

The new show launched less than two months ago.

Figures by research house GFK show KIIS has achieved an 8.4 percent share of listening, compared to just 5 percent for its predecessor Mix 106.5, which makes it the number one FM station in Sydney.

A posting on the pair’s Facebook page says:

Thanks guys for all your beautiful messages, without your loyalty this would never have happened. KIIS 1065 is the new #1 FM station in Sydney. Breakfast show tied with our sister station and good mates Jonesy & Amanda & we couldn’t be happier to share it with them as we love those guys. This post was not only celebrating our breakfast win but the station going #1 as well. Jackie x

Kyle and Jackie O quit another Sydney station 2dayFM in December after being tempted to help relaunch a competitor’s channel.

Subsequently, 2dayFM have had a disastrous survey period, shedding more than half of its audience to a four percent share (previously 8.4 percent).

2dayFM’s new morning team, Jules, Sophie, Merrick and Mel B saw their breakfast audience plummet.  With the most difficult job in Australian radio, they picked up a 10.4 percent market share from Kyle & Jackie O from the previous survey but now have a 3.8 percent share.

KIIS shares the top FM breakfast show position with WSFM’s Jonesy and Amanda.

Overall talk station 2GB leads the Sydney market place with a 12.6 percent share, ABC702 is second with 9.6 percent and KIIS1065 is third with 8.4 percent.

GFK took over from Nielsen  as provider of radio ratings in Australia from this survey onwards and there are small methodological changes since the last research period.

Watch Kyle & Jackie O celebrate.
