British radio ‘Roll of Honour’

The UK’s commercial radio industry body RadioCentre has released a video featuring the 40 most influential people, as the sector prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary later this year.

Renowned British radio DJs Chris Tarrent, Chris Evans and Christian O’ Connell were among those singled-out in the Roll of Honour, which recognised individuals for their contribution to UK radio.  Several respected radio executives – past and present – are also on the list.

Nominations were sought from across the industry and an independent committee picked the final 40 names.

UK commercial radio began in October 1973 when London news/talk station LBC took to the air.  It was followed days later by the launch of Capital Radio.

Paul Brown, Chair of the selection committee said:  “We all enjoyed a splendid walk down memory lane – a real privilege and a reminder of the fun we had all had in our various commercial radio roles. We considered so many talented and influential people and have ended up with a powerful 40 that reflects a fascinating 40 years.”

Andrew Harrison, Chief Executive of RadioCentre added: “The Roll of Honour recognises an outstanding collection of individuals – the 40 men and women who tell the story of our sector from its start-up 40 years ago as Independent Local Radio through to the modern commercial radio sector we know today.”
