Award for taboo-breaking radio station

Radio Netherlands Worldwide (RNW) has been awarded a prize for a controversial sexual health campaign considered taboo in many parts of the world.

The website Love Matters.info – which describes the benefits and burdens of love, sex and relationships – has received the prestigious ‘Award for Excellence & Innovation in Sexuality Education’.

The prize is given out by The World Association for Sexual Health(WAS).

In India, RNW’s web project was made available in English and Hindi.

In total, the web and mobile sites reached more than 2.14 million people in 2012.

The jury praised Love Matters’ innovative, sex-friendly approach which “enabled RNW to reach large groups of young people ‘in challenging settings”.

RNW says the project is now set to be launched in China and the Middle East later in the year.

In 2012, RNW changed its focus to target countries where where freedom of expression is severely restricted.

The station broadcasts in Mandarin, Spanish, French and Arabic on shortwave after ending English and Dutch programmes last year due to deep budget cuts.
