AIR AM channel to go FM in metros

India’s public broadcaster All India Radio’s (AIR) AM service may soon be available on FM transmitters in the biggest four metros in the country, reports Radioandmusic.com.

Vividh Bharti – the commercial channel of AIR is already available on FM in the rest of the country.

AIR Director General F Sheyeryar told the publication that medium wave broadcasts had not been possible in the metros until now because of highrise buildings.

But FM transmitters are already available in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata for use by Vividh Bharati, he said.

Vividh Bharati was launched in 1957 and provides a mix of film music, skits, short plays and interactive programmes.

Some of its most popular programmes have been airing for decades,including ‘Sangeet Sarita’, ‘Bhule Bisre Geet’, ‘Hawa Mahal’, ‘Jaimala’, ‘Inse Miliye’ and Chhaya Geet’ .
