Thailand to auction 4,000 digital radio licences

Thailand’s media regulator plans to auction 4,000 digital radio licences early in 2015, reports The Nation newspaper.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) says it will licence 20 national frequencies, the rest will be local and regional licences.

The roll-out will follow a year-long trial of digital radio by the Thai government’s Public Relations Department, state-owned public broadcaster MCOT and the Royal Thai Army.

An agreement to allow the trial to go ahead is due to be signed next month.

The report didn’t confirm which digital radio technology will be used but licences are expected to cost about US$3,200 (Bt 100,000).
