New station for remote Nepal province

South Korean public broadcaster Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) launched a new radio station in Nepal on Thursday.

The new service for the remote town of Jomsom in Mustang province has also been named MBC (for Mustang Broadcasting Community).

Located about 2,800 meters above sea level and surrounded by the steep Himalayan Mountains, Jomsom could not be served easily by radio frequencies.

MBC put several of its transmitter experts on the project, which has cost almost US$1 million so far.

The station has been funded by MBC along with Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the ODA organisation and sportswear brand Lafuma.

According to the Korean broadcaster, the aim is to ensure that isolated communities can receive regular local news bulletins and engage with the station.
