Tributes paid to jock Johnny Midnight

73-year old Philippines radio host Johnny Midnight, whose real name was William Xerez Burgos Joseph Jr., died of prostate cancer on Monday, reports the Inquirer.

He first worked as a radio broadcaster in ABS-CBN but came into the spotlight for hosting ‘Midnight Connection’, where he allegedly healed people through ‘toning’ and ‘pyramiding’.

Midnight won a Presidential award for raising funds for earthquake victims in 1968, but soon became jobless when ABS-CBN was shut down during Martial law in 1972.

He then worked as a dishwasher, waiter and manager of a local restaurant before returning to the airwaves in 1980 with DZBB to host ‘Midnight Connection’.

Chanting incantations for 15 minutes at the stroke of midnight, he would ask listeners to drink ‘energised’ water to heal themselves.

Eventually, the show was suspended and he started his own ‘Temple of Man’ where he continued his alleged practices.

In 2008, he was in the news when his son was involved in a high profile drug case and Midnight was accused of bribing the authorities for his release.

Many of his fans took to his Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/midnightconnection to pay their tributes.
