TNL Radio Sri Lanka turns 21

One of Sri Lanka’s leading English radio stations, TNL Radio, celebrates its 21st anniversary on Wednesday with a contest named ’21 Years of Awesome’.

Started by chairman and CEO Niraj Wickremesinghe in July 1993, TNL was the first private station in Sri Lanka, breaking the monopoly of public broadcaster SLBC.

Beginning with a team of just eight people, the station’s staff has grown to over a hundred strong.

TNL has gone on to launch two additional stations Lite 89.2 in 1999 and later Rhythm FM and even went on to become a TV network under the TNL brand, now under different owners.

TNL’s target demographic is 18-35 year olds and its music format has a strong rock leaning.

TNL was among the first stations to stream its programming live through the internet and over the past two decades its programming included a number of top syndicated shows, due to an affiliation with US networks like ABC.

On Wednesday, find out why TNL Radio has been recognised as one of Sri Lanka’s premier English stations when Asia Radio Today interviews chairman and CEO Niraj Wickremesinghe.
