Tamil web station for Radio City

Indian radio network Radio City has launched a new Tamil internet station.

Radio City Tamil is the station’s first ever web service to feature regional Indian music and will complement the five existing web streams on its music portal PlanetRadiocity.com.

The station will play non-stop Tamil songs, the majority of which are made popular through so-called Kollywood films.

Kollywood is the nickname for the Tamil regional movie industry, which is borrowed from Bollywood (the Hindi movie industry).

Radio City Tamil was launched on Wednesday with the help of renowned music composer D Imman and actor Sivakarthikeyan, who has already starred in seven films over the past two years.

Radio City CEO Apurva Purohit said: “Web radio allows us to offer regional content beyond boundaries of city /country. Tamil music is a treasure trove of some of the world’s best compositions. We believe the access to such rich music should not to be restrained by geography.”

Radio City also owns two FM licences in Tamil Nadhu, serving the cities of Chennai and Coimbatore.
