RTHK Radio 4’s ‘2017 Top 10 Music Headlines’

‘Top 10 Music Headlines’, presented by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) Radio 4 – a classical music station, is now in its 32nd year.

Each year, the station invites listeners around the world together with professional critics, to tell their choice of the top headlines.

The news items are nominated by professionals in the music scene, and are based on their influence on cultural and academic development in Hong Kong. Newsworthiness is a secondary consideration.

The station organized an annual poll to choose the headlines from December 24 to January 12, in which 1,536 local and overseas voters participated.

Voters had to select 10 news headlines from 20 nominations made by professionals in the music scene, and selection was made on the basis of cultural value and impact on academic development.

Music headline “The classical music field loses several prominent figures: soprano Barbara Fei, Cantonese Opera grand master Fung Wah, composer Yu Lun, and conductors Lim Kek-tjiang and Yan Liangkun, both of whom were closely connected to Hong Kong” ranks top among all with over half of the votes cast (55.5 percent).
