Radio stars help mark 50 years of Singapore TV

Radio stars The Muttons (aka Justin Ang & Vernon A) from 987FM and Jean Danker from Class 95 helped celebrate 50 years of TV broadcasting in Singapore on New Years Eve.

The trio were part of the hosting team for the Celebrate TV50 countdown party, held at The Float @ Marina Bay on Tuesday.

The seven-hour show saw English-Irish boyband The Wanted and Taiwanese singer-actor Wang Lee Hom top the bill.

Also on stage were Singaporean stars Rui En and Taufik Batisah, who performed his new Malay single “Ikrar Kasih” for the first time.

Radio Television Singapore began English and Mandarin programmes in 1963 on what are now MediaCorp-owned Channels 5 and 8.

Many of Singapore TV’s much loved shows including classic Chinese drama series and English sitcoms were celebrated at Tuesday’s event.

Cast members from comedy series Under One Roof and Phua Chu Kang appeared in character and the audience was treated to video clips of some of the most gripping TV moments.

The company says 18,000 people watch the show live at Marina Bay,

A record 1.6 million people saw the New Year show on Channel’s 5 and 8, which simulcast the event along with MediaCorp’s interactive TV service Toggle.
